Dr. Murray Penner was born in Steinbach, MB and raised in southern Manitoba, becoming an avid outdoorsman, hockey player and fan, and motorcycle racer. A strong interest in academics led to graduation with honors from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and runner-up status for the Mechanical Engineering Gold Medal. He was awarded 1 of 8 NSERC 1967 Scholarships in Canada that year, the highest postgraduate engineering scholarship in Canada. He then was hired by Bristol Aerospace in Winnipeg, working for a short time in the Rocket Design Division, prior to a change in direction toward a career in medicine.


Dr. Penner graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary in 1992 and completed a Rotating Internship in Victoria, BC in 1993. He completed his specialist training in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC in 1998. He then obtained subspecialty fellowship training in adult foot and ankle reconstructive surgery at the Flinders University of South Australia in Adelaide, Australia in 1998-9. After a short period of practice in Queensland, Australia, Dr. Penner returned to Canada and began practice at the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, BC. In 2004, Dr. Penner moved his practice to its current location in downtown Vancouver, where he is now based at St. Paul's Hospital. He also works as a consultant at the Visiting Specialist Clinic at the Whitehorse General Hospital in Whitehorse, Yukon four times per year


Dr. Penner's practice is focused on adult orthopedic foot and ankle reconstruction and orthopedic trauma. He has a particular interest in total ankle replacement and post-traumatic foot and ankle problems.


He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedics at the University of British Columbia, and is actively involved in clinical research, teaching medical students, residents, and subspecialty foot and ankle fellows. He is the past secretary and a current member of the executive of the Canadian Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, a member of the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, and a member of the American Academy Orthopedic Surgeons. He has been invited as a visiting professor and lecturer at numerous orthopedic conferences and institutions in Canada, United States, and Europe, and has presented and published numerous research papers, scientific articles, and book chapters.
